One by one, specialty manufacturers phased out their accessories for the 2002-2005 Thunderbird. Once common items like Thunderbird watches, T-shirts, key rings, desk clocks and diecast models, became hard-to-find collectibles, often available only through sources like Ebay. Since Ford dealers no longer sold new Thunderbirds, companies like The Ford Collection, who provided accessories to both Ford dealers and retail buyers, discontinued many of their Thunderbird products, eventually eliminating them altogether. The last of the new Thunderbirds rolled off the assembly lines in the Summer of 2005, and after production ended, demand for aftermarket products began to lose steam. The list of custom aftermarket accessories for the new Ford Thunderbird continued to grow and included a wide array of interior and exterior trim, custom grilles, including both billet style and wire mesh designs, wire wheels, and specialty clothing items. More custom aftermarket products for the Thunderbird followed from 2003-2005, catering to a unique niche market of Thunderbird owners and enthusiasts. K&N Engineering created a custom Cold Air Intake system for added horsepower, and Borla Industries built a bolt-0n, cat-back performance exhaust for the new Thunderbird. In response to the new demand, a number of established automotive companies developed performance upgrades specifically for the new T-Bird. It wasn’t long after the introduction of the new Thunderbird before owners wanted to add more power and performance to their cars. Powersport also introduced the patented ‘Roadster Style’ Tonneau Cover, which was designed by noted Ford designer, James Powers, who also designed the entire ‘California Custom’ body kit. One of the first to offer a hard tonneau cover was Powersport, whose line of custom body kit accessories could be combined to create the Powersport ‘California Custom,’ which transformed the stock 2002-2005 Thunderbird into an attention-grabbing custom show car without expensive body work. As the new Thunderbird gained popularity among car buyers, more and more companies began developing and selling custom parts including stainless steel exterior trim, custom dash kits, tonneau covers and other custom body kits and appearance accessories. The new 2002 Thunderbird also attracted the attention of a number of automotive aftermarket manufacturers and specialty companies, several of whom displayed their products at the 2002 SEMA show. Companies like ‘The Ford Collection’ carried a wide array of Thunderbird-related products including coffee mugs, key rings, watches, clocks, diecast models, T-Shirts, Polo Shirts, jackets, and much more. When the 2002 Ford Thunderbird first hit dealer showrooms, Ford dealers carried a number of Thunderbird specialty items for buyers and owners of the new T-Bird.
